High greed has historically coincided with local tops and high hardware prices; deep fear is when second-hand miners get cheap.

Difficulty going up is bad news for miners: the same hardware earns a smaller share of each block. It retargets every 2,016 blocks, about every two weeks.

At the next halving the block reward drops by half, which halves the expected value of every solo lottery ticket overnight. It does not change your electricity bill.

Fees are part of a block's payout. When the mempool is busy, the reward for finding a block is meaningfully larger than the subsidy alone.

Why these numbers matter to a solo miner

Difficulty is your competition

Your odds of finding a block are your hashrate divided by everyone else's. When difficulty rises, your odds fall by the same proportion — and it has risen relentlessly for a decade.

Price sets the prize

A block is worth the subsidy plus fees. That is a fixed amount of BTC, so the fiat value of winning tracks the Bitcoin price directly, while your electricity bill does not.

The halving cuts the prize in half

Every 210,000 blocks the subsidy halves. Your costs stay the same. Factor it in before buying hardware you plan to run for years.
